CEREC Crown vs. Traditional Crowns

If you’ve ever had a dental crown placed, you know it can be a time-consuming process. Traditional crowns typically involve multiple appointments, including messy impressions, and a temporary crown that may loosen while you wait for your permanent one. Fortunately, dental technology has advanced significantly.

Our team at The Center for High Tech Dentistry on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York, led by Kaveh Abedini, DMD, and Simon Rosenberg, DMD, offers CEREC (chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics), which allows you to get a custom crown placed in just one visit. That means you don’t need to get a temporary crown, which means you won’t have to come in for a second appointment.

Here, we show you the benefits of a CEREC crown compared to a traditional crown.

1. Time and convenience

The primary advantage of choosing a CEREC crown procedure over a traditional one is that it only requires a single appointment.

Traditional crowns typically involve two visits. During the first visit, the dental team prepares your tooth, takes impressions, and places a temporary crown. After about two weeks, you return for your permanent crown placement.

CEREC crowns, on the other hand, are designed, milled, and placed in a single appointment. At The Center for High Tech Dentistry, we use 3D digital imaging to create a precise model of your tooth and make your custom crown right here in our office, usually in about an hour.

2. No temporary crowns

With traditional crowns, you wear a temporary crown for a couple of weeks, which is often uncomfortable and can break, fall off, or cause sensitivity. Since CEREC crowns are completed the same day, there’s no need for a temporary crown, eliminating one of the main hassles of traditional crown treatment.

3. Materials and strength

Both types of crowns can be made of strong, long-lasting materials. Traditional crowns can be made of metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or all-ceramic. The lab can customize the look and materials based on your needs.

CEREC crowns are made from a solid block of ceramic and are known for their durability and natural appearance. And, they’re metal-free.

4. Fit and precision

Thanks to advanced digital scanning, CEREC crowns offer an excellent fit and precision. The digital impressions are often more accurate than traditional mold impressions, which can deform slightly. A better fit means less adjustment and greater long-term comfort.

Is a CEREC crown right for you?

Same-day crowns aren’t right for every situation. In some complex cases or when you need specialized materials, we may recommend a traditional crown. But for most patients, CEREC offers a faster, easier, and more comfortable solution without sacrificing quality.

If you need a crown and want to skip the temporary and second visit, find out if CEREC same-day crowns are a good option for you. Schedule an evaluation with our dental team by calling 212-988-8822 or booking online today.
