If a toothache has been keeping you up at night, or if a routine X-ray revealed a problem you didn't even know was there, a root canal may be exactly what your tooth needs. Teeth with infected pulp can be painful, sensitive to hot and cold, or tender when you bite down, though sometimes there are no symptoms at all until your dentist spots trouble on an image. At The Center for High Tech Dentistry, our Upper East Side root canal treatments are designed to relieve that discomfort and protect your natural tooth for years to come.
Dr. Simon W. Rosenberg, who founded this practice and still treats patients several days a week, along with Dr. Kaveh Abedini, bring decades of combined experience to every root canal procedure. As a family practice serving Manhattan for over 35 years, we have treated generations of patients, and many of our longtime patients have trusted us with their care for more than 30 years.
A root canal is a treatment that removes the pulp of your tooth, the soft tissue made up of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue that runs from the crown down into the root in your jawbone. When that pulp becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal is often the only way to save the tooth rather than lose it.
Root canals become necessary when an infection develops deep inside a tooth. This usually happens when an untreated cavity worsens over time, or when a tooth suffers trauma such as a crack or fracture. You may need a root canal if you are experiencing:
Left untreated, the infection can spread, cause significant pain, and eventually force your dentist to remove the tooth entirely. Root canal therapy allows us to clean out the infection and preserve the natural tooth structure whenever possible.
Your Upper East Side root canal begins with a careful examination and X-ray to confirm the diagnosis. Once your provider determines the extent of the decay, local anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable, an opening is made in the crown of the tooth, and the damaged pulp is removed. The canals and pulp chamber are then thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
The procedure concludes with the opening being filled using a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth. Depending on how much healthy structure remains, the tooth is closed with a temporary or permanent filling. Since the internal blood supply is removed during treatment, the tooth can become more brittle over time, which is why a post and core, followed by a crown, is often recommended for long-term strength and protection.
Our office is equipped with CEREC same-day crown technology, meaning many patients who need a crown after their root canal can avoid a second appointment and a temporary crown altogether. We also use T-Scan for precise occlusal analysis and INNERVIEW technology to detect internal fractures that might otherwise go unnoticed. These tools help your dentist plan treatment with accuracy and confidence.
| Feature | Benefit | What It Means for You |
|---|---|---|
| Same-day CEREC crowns | No second appointment needed | Save time and avoid a temporary crown |
| Digital X-rays | Lower radiation, sharper detail | Faster, more accurate diagnosis |
| INNERVIEW fracture detection | Identifies hidden cracks | Catch problems before they worsen |
| Local anesthesia | Numbs the treatment area | A comfortable, pain-free procedure |
We accept major PPO insurance plans, though we are not in-network with any insurance company. We are happy to help you understand your out-of-network benefits before treatment.
Most root canal appointments take one to two visits, depending on the tooth and the extent of the infection. Same-day crown technology can help reduce follow-up visits.
With local anesthesia, most patients feel little to no discomfort during the procedure itself. Many people report feeling significant relief once the infected pulp is removed.
Without treatment, an infection can spread, cause worsening pain, and ultimately lead to tooth loss. A root canal is often the best way to save your natural tooth.
